Baltimore florists are preparing for the biggest F. T. D. gathering yet. The dates are October 10 to 12. Last week's heat wave, followed by the heavy rains and colder weather this week, cut down the large supplies of stock on the wholesale markets. One Classified ad in last week's Review contained 219 lines. Their pulling power has transformed the aforetime "little liners," in some cases, into pretty big ones. Unquestionably the bulb crops are light, but even of the shortest of them it seems possible for the florist to obtain as many as he wants at the price. There is a limit to everything. If you have not gone over your heating system this summer, do so now, before cold weather arrives. A few minor re- pairs or replacements now may avert serious trouble in midwinter. Few accounts for telegraph orders be- tween florists, particularly those in small towns, run into more than a few dollars. They should be paid promptly, not al- lowed to drag several months. The retailer who carries customers on his books six months, a year and more encourages one of two ideas in the minds of his clientele; they think he either is so poor a business man they can pay him as they please, or makes so large a profit he can well afford to wait for his money. Neither of these ideas is one we should be willing to let prevail. Dutch bulbs which do not reach these shores before the tariff act becomes law
