North Front.—Major General Anthony Wayne, was born near the Paoli,Chester county, State of Pennsylvania, A. D. 1745. After a life of honor andusefulness, he died in December, 1796, at a military post on the shore of LakeErie, Commander-in-chief of the army of the United States. His military achieve-ments are consecrated in the history of his country, and in the hearts of hiscountrymen. His remains are here interred. 24 LOCOMOTIVE PAOLI MONUMENT. individual subscriptions of the citizens, erected a monument over theremains of the gallant men. It is composed of white marble, and isa pedestal surmounted by a pyramid. Upon the four sides of thebody of the pedestal are appropriate inscriptions. The grounds en-closed, embrace about thirty-sis acres, rising to a gentle elevation,and presenting the form of the letter L. The monument is situatedin the angle of the plot, surrounded by a heavy stone-wall, and shadedwith stately trees. The neighborhood of Paoli is full of interesting incidents connectedwith the revolution. A few miles to the right is Valley Forge, whereWashington and his army were encamped during the severe winterof 1777. Here, half-naked, hungry, and sick, a large number of the sol-diers died.
