Khampa horseman, dressed in their finest and most decorative outfits, which include rare red coral, amber and turquoise jewels, endangered snow leopard and tiger pelts and hand embroidered silks, at the Yushu Horse Racing Festival in Qinghai. Otherwise known as Yaji- the Festival of Summer Pleasures- the festival is one of many that occur simultaneously across Eastern Tibet. They originate from the great clan gatherings, where the nomadic tribes would meet annually to settle disputes over land, leadership and who had the fastest horse- or in some cases yak. The horsemen of the former kingdom of Kham still meet and compete in the same events, including that of "best dressed", and although prestige is high on the takings and usually no blood is lost.
