The rods are straight orslightly curved, and usually are not uniformly cylindrical throughouttheir entire length, but are swollen at the end, or pointed at the endsand swollen in the middle portion. The average length of the bacilliin pure cultures from different sources frequently varies greatly, andeven from the same culture individual bacilli differ much in their sizeand shape. This is especially true when the bacilli are grown in asso-ciation with other bacteria. The two bacilli of a pair may lie with theirlong diameter in the same axis or at an obtuse or an acute angle. Thebacilli possess no spores, but have in them highly refractive bodies, some of which are the starting-point for new bacilli. There are noflagella. For mode of division see p.
