St Wendreda's church, March: view E of the late C15th double hammer-beam roof decorated with angels beneath which her shrine stood until it was dismantled at the Reformation in 1543. The roof of 1470-1520 has 136 carved wooden figures: 118 angels (divine messengers) plus saints, apostles & martyrs. Unique dedication to Wendreda who moved here from Exning, Newmarket, after King Anna was killed in battle against Penda of Mercia in c 654 and his family was dispersed.
