Woman with a Veil, c. 1891. Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, 1824-1904). Bronze; overall: x cm (23 13/16 x 12 7/8 in.). Many of Gérôme’s best known works reflect the 19th-century European fascination with the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa, which manifested in Orientalist works like this sculpture depicting a woman adjusting her veil. Multiple versions of this sculpture exist, including some with marble and gold additions.
