Prostate cancer radiotherapy equipment. Medical worker loading a lead-lined box with long, hollow needles carrying radioactive sources. The needles are being positioned for effective irradiation of the prostate of a patient with prostate cancer. An ultrasound probe and a template grid equivalent to the one seen here, are used to guide the needles through the perineal skin to the prostate gland, to implant the radioactive sources. This is known as brachytherapy, and is a form of radiotherapy. The radiation kills the cancerous cells.
