Prenatal hair. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of foetal skin covered in prenatal hair, or lanugo. This very fine, and usually unpigmented, downy hair develops around the fifth month of pregnancy. It is normally shed around 7 to 8 months of pregnancy, but is often present at birth, disappearing on its own within a few days or week. Magnificaiton: x50 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
