Apollo 17 was the eleventh and final manned mission in the United States Apollo space program. Apollo 17 landed on the moon on 11 December 1972 in the Taurus-Littrow region, to the east of the Sea of Serenity. The site was chosen for its expected geological diversity. Astronaut Eugene Cernan was accompanied by Astronaut and professional geologist Harrison Schmitt. During their 75 hour stay on the moon, Schmitt and Cernan made three excursions and collected 110kg of moon rock.
