A by-pass valve BB (Plate 73) is a small valve, one of which is placed on each end of the steam-chest for the purpose of preventing excessive pres-sure. They are connected with the live steam side of thevalve EEE and the steam port between the valve and cyl-inder FF. They are held to their seats by the steam-chestpressure and are unseated when the compression in thecylinder becomes greater than the boiler pressure. If a by-pass valve is broken it should be tested for bycovering the exhaust port with the main valve. If theblow then ceases and steam appears at the cylinder cockit indicates a broken by-pass valve, and the cylinder cockwhich shows steam will indicate which valve is broken by-pass valve will cause a heavy blow at thestack when the exhaust is open. Plate 73 shows the backend of the cylinder open to exhaust, and also shows howsteam can pass from E to F and out of the stack in casethe back by-pass is BREAKDOWNS. 193
