Like venous congestion in general, congestion of the liverfrom cardiac disease, produces first enlargement, which mayoften be recognized during life, and later on wasting, dependent, doubtless, on the imperfect nutrition of the organ. With this isassociated some amount of induration, though less than is pro-duced by some other causes. Generally at the post-mortem exami-nation we find the liver rather small than large, hard, and withthe characteristic nutmeg appearance. Chronic Congestion, Nutmeg Liver.—This consists, in its best markedinstances, of deep reddish-brown congestion, forming patchesand streaks occupying the central parts of the lobules, and sur-rounded by patches of a greyish, or yellowish white colour. Thecongested portions are most definitely limited, and the contrast Fig. Section of liver showing- the nutmeg* appearance; the dark parts are the deep redcongested central parts of the lobules. between them and the pale parts is extremely striking. Thispartly depends on the circumstance that the portions thus devoidof blood are afiected with fatty degeneration or infiltration, achange which, by causing the cells to increase in bulk, occasions CONGESTION. 617 compression of tlie intervening capillaries. That this is the truecause of the limitation of the congestion is proved by its exactlyceasing at the inner margin of the zone of fatty speaking, fatty change begins in the peripheral parts ofthe lobules, and it would seem that these portions contain physio-logically more fat than the central portions. Many of the cells inthe congested part are seen filled with dark yellow matter; verymany, also, are atrophied, probably in consequence of the bloodstagnating in the distended capillaries, while some granu
