. Springfield present and prospective; the city of homes . of the mechanical departments, 48 Springficld Present and Prospective the century just passed. It is doubtful if there has been for manyyears any improvement in educational thought and practice of greaterpresent value or of better promise for the future than the emphasisnow being given to the practical side of education through thevarious forms of manual and technical training. But the present development of the practical element in theschools of Springfield has not been brought about at the expense ofgeneral culture, nor is it likely to lead to that result. The too earlyand perhaps over-emphasized specializing of some foreign schoolswill not be copied anywhere in America. It is cenainly not theprovince of technical high schools to develop special skill by practicealong narrow lines. The aim is breadth of training combined witheffectiveness. All the older studies of proved value are retained andtheir value increased by giving them vital relations with practicallife. Charles F. Warner. y<Jli:^u;ui^ -^i^y-t^-Str-T-^f^^ y^/^X^^CZ^,^
