OATS, 124 BUSHELS TO THE ACRE 12 = THE PRAIRIE PROVINCES OF CANADA Occasionally when the Western farmeris pressed for time he follows the unwisepractice of disking the land without plough-ing. Except in rare cases—describedfarther on in this article—it is inadvisableto do this, for no disk, however well made, can supplant the plough. The disk is aninstrument which should be used only tosupplement the plough and not to supplantit. When land is prepared for crop bydisking, the perennial weeds are not de-stroyed, and they quickly take possessionof the ground, lessening its productivenessfor several years. Disking as a preparationis allowable only when the land has beenthoroughly summer-fallowed the previousyear and is quite free from perennial weedsof all kinds. It is then sometimes advis-able to burn off the stubble and disk, oreven to disk without burning
