Urethritis. Coloured urethrogram X-ray of the urethra (pink) of a 19-year-old man, showing a narrowing (stricture, blue, upper left) caused by inflammation of the urethra (urethritis). The pelvis (brown, upper frame) and the penis (lower frame), with an inserted catheter (brown), are also seen. In men the urethra carries urine from the bladder and sperm out of the body. The inflammation in this patient may have been caused by gonorrhoea, an infection with the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoea. Urethritis causes a urethral discharge and pain or difficulty on urination. In severe cases, a stricture may develop. Treatment includes antibiotics to cure the gonorrhoea.
