In November and December 2017 the Canal and River Trust are replacing the gates on Appley Bridge lock on the Leeds and Liverpool canal in West Lancashire. Here the second of the pair of new tail gates for the lock is lifted from the work boat that has transported them along the canal to the worksite and is being laid on top of the first one that is on the lock side. A “spider crane” has been installed on a temporary bridge constructed over the lock to lift the gates and will have to be repositioned to replace the old gates. Both sets of the steel gates are being replaced with new wooden ones constructed from oak, which weigh about 4000kg each. Image Cw 5058 copyright Colin Wareing of Colin and Carole’s Creations
