Measuring reaction rate. Students using syringe apparatus used to measure the rate of the reaction between marble (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) and a dilute acid. The conical flask containing the reactants is connected to a syringe (right). During the reaction carbon dioxide gas is produced, which is collected by the syringe. Measuring the volume of gas collected over time allows the rate of the reaction to be determined.
