Avan Dzoragets, a boutique hotel by Tufenkian Heritage, in the Debed Canyon in Armenia in the evening. Established by US-born Armenian carpet dealer James Tufenkian who arrived in Yerevan shortly after the fall of the Soviet Union to find his ancestral land in economic ruin, Tufenkian Heritage is a collection of boutique hotels offering a fresh change from glum Soviet inns. Launched in 2001 with 14-room Avan Villa on the outskirts of Yerevan, the group has now blossomed to four hotels, with plans for two more in the contested province of Nagorno-Karabagh. Three- storey Avan Dzoragets, nestled in-between the turbulent Dzoragets River and the imposing gorge, is the most popular in the group.
