German-Jewish refugees at Harris House, Southport, Lancashire, 1938-1939. Artist: Unknown
German-Jewish refugees at Harris House, Southport, Lancashire, 1938-1939. Harris House, at 27 Argyle Road, Southport, (now in Merseyside), was run by the Southport Branch of the British Inter-Aid Committee of the Movement for the Care of Children from Germany. It provided shelter for Jewish children fleeing Austria and Nazi Germany. Most never saw their parents again. The house was forced to close in 1940 as the British authorities believed that refugees over the age of 16 could be a security risk.
