An 1839 depiction of the Greek mythological figure Comus (Κῶμος) the intoxicated god of festivity, revels and nocturnal activities. If represented as as a winged youth or a child-like satyr he symbolises anarchy and chaos. Comus can also be depicted as a paralytic drunk. He is essentially a god of excess and is often shown (as here and sometimes with a wreath of flowers on his head) carrying a torch that is being dropped. He has links (but not directly) with other carnal or intoxicated gods such as Pan and Dionysus.
