Brooklyn Museum The Indian Stairway THE festival in the great white marble court of theJain temple furnished the inspiration and led to theconstruction of the decorated stairway. The festival cameat a most opportune time. Indeed, I am not sure but what itwas planned with reference to our visit. It was altogethera surprise to me. I had no idea as we drove through thecrowded streets that we were to be guests at such a rare andamazing entertainment. Xever have I seen a gayer andmore good-natured crowd and even in India one more gailyand beautiful dressed. It presented all the colors of therainbow and moved with us freely and rhythmically. Wewere bound for a common goal. Our host anticipated ourquestions. The soberly dressed women who carried whatseemed tightly rolled fringed shawls were nuns, and theirburden was used w^hen they seated themselves, to brush smallinsects away. All animal life is sacred.
