Professor William Odling (1829-1921), British chemist. Odling qualified as a doctor in 1851 and held several other posts before being appointed as professor of chemistry at Oxford University in 1872. There he produced work which contributed to the theory of valence. This theory proposes that an atom can only interact with a fixed number of other atoms or chemical groups. He also classified the group of compounds known as the silicates.
