Cross Section of AmiensCathedral It will be noticed that there is a row ofrather low windows opening under theroof of the aisle. These constitute theso-called triforium (E). Above them isthe clerestory (F), the windows of whichopen between the flying buttresses. Soit came about that the walls of a Gothicchurch were in fact TheEgyptians were the first to invent theclerestory and put high, wide,graceful windows intheir place. This newstyle of architecture isknown as the Gothic^and its underlying prin-ciples can readily beunderstood from alittle study of the ac-companying diagram(Fig. 58), which showshow a Gothic cathedralis supported, not byheavy walls, but bybuttresses. The architects dis-covered in the firstplace that the concavestone ceiling, which isknown as the vaulting(A), could be supportedby fibs (B).
