Wild grass and corn. Computer artwork comparing wild grass (Balsas teosinte) and corn, or maize, (Zea mays). This wild grass is the ancestor of modern corn. It was cultivated in lowland areas of southwestern Mexico over 8,700 years ago. The modern plant has fewer sides branches, which has resulted in fewer, but larger ears.
