Marcellus Eldredge, a former mayor of Portsmouth, died in Bostun,March 12, and six hours later his wife also died. Mr. Eldredge was a native ofChatham, Mass. He was engaged in business in Portsmouth for many years, butretired some years ago, although he retained an interest in several banking andmanufacturing enterprises in that city. Of late years he has resided in Chathamin the summer, but lived in Boston in the winter. He was elected a state senatorfrom the Portsmouth district in 1876 and 1S77, and he was mayor of Portsmouthin 1886 and 1SS7. He was a Democrat, and was elected by a large majority overhis Republican rival. His gift of a public library to his native town in July, 1S96,and more recently of an organ and set of memorial windows to the Methodistchurch of Chatham, will serve as lasting memorials of his thoughtful interest inthe welfare of the place of his birth.
