Jan Beukelsz., Aka Jan van Leiden was around 1534-35 the self-crowned king of the backlower in Munster, the place of the new Jerusalem. The moment is shown on the print when Beukelsz. The market square enters to speak. Beukelsz. - richly dressed - is depicted in full length and in front view, leaning with his right hand on a sword and his right foot resting on the name block. A young servant hands him the Bible on which the royal crown lies with globe which looks like the Keizerskroon of the Holy Roman Empire. Behind him, a lakei holds his horse on the halter. Two more moments from the history of Jan van Leyden were depicted: after the army had taken Munster in 1535, he was imprisoned for accusing a forbidden religion in the city. He was sentenced to death: Beukelsz is left. Did dressed to a pole bound where he is processed with glowing pliers. The outcome can be seen in the background: the body of Beukelsz. Has been put in a cage and hung on the south side of the Sint-Lambertuskerk in Münster as an attraction. Netherlands paper etching / engraving Münster
