Albert Fert (born 1938). Portrait of the French physicist Albert Fert presenting his work on spintronics (magnetoelectronics). Fert is best known as one of the discoverers of giant magnetoresistance, which enabled the production of gigabyte-sized hard disks. This discovery won him, and Peter Grunberg, the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics. Spintronics is an emerging technology exploiting both the intrinsic spin of electrons and the associated magnetic moment, in addition to their fundamental electronic charge, in solid-state devices.
