He was a schoolteacher and later School Commissioner, also town clerk,Justice Oi the Peace, a captain ot militia, and was a manof good standing in tlie commiinity in which he raised a family of seven children, of which James the oldest. Ail of this large familv, ulth the excep-tion of the last born, who died in infancv, lived till theirteens. The pcirents were both niembers of the M. The subject of this sketch was educated in the con^monschools. He was studious, having a decided preferencefor poetry.
