Illustration of the transcription regulator NrdR from the bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor bound to a synthetic DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, purple) molecule. Transcription is the copying of a gene's DNA sequence to mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid). It is the first step in protein synthesis. NrdR controls the transcription of ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) genes. RNR genes code for an enzyme that catalyses the synthesis of deoxyribonucleotides, the building blocks of DNA. NrdR is found in most bacteria, but not in eukaryotes and so is a target for new antibiotic drugs.
