Ammonite fossil. Cut and polished section through an ammonite fossil. Mineral crystals (white) have been deposited inside the partitions in the spiral ammonite shell. Another rock (black) has replaced the shell structure. Ammonites were molluscs that lived between 360-65 million years ago. This tiny specimen is 2 centimetres across.
