Pen y Gaer Iron Age hillfort, North Wales: view NW at entrance (revetted passageway) through the inner stone rampart on the W. Up to three ramparts (stone, and banks & ditches) enclose an area of two hectares. There are hut platforms within the fort and patches of chevaux-de-frise defences (small upright stones) outside the S ramparts and the W entrance. Rear centre: pylons march through the pass of Bwlch y Ddeufaen also used by a prehistoric route & the Roman road from Segontium (Caernarfon) to Canovium (Caerhun) in the Conwy Valley. Rear R: the ridge of Tal y Fan.
