The Relief com-panies will not be called upon to take upduty until a fifth alarm, and there is,. 1SA130RE GURMENDEZ therefore, no pressing need for their im-mediate equipment. Isadore Gurmen-dez has been appointed captain of ReliefEngine No. 2. He has been over nine-teen years in the Fire Department, hav-ing joined on December 28, 1880. He isa native of this city and was born July29, 1857. Here he was educated andlearned the business of a harness was first hoseman of Engine No. i,then to No. 12, and for ten years be-longed to that company, for three yearsof which he served as foreman; then pro-moted to Chemical Engine No. i as en-gineer, and after about one year with that company was transferred to Chemi-cal No. 4. He is now detailed to takecharge of the harness shop of the corpor-ation yard, and is foreman of that branchof the service. Captain Gurmendez has,consequently, had a varied experience inthe Department, and his versatile talentmakes his usefulness peculiarly effective. The other members of the company sofar appointed are: Lieutenant, JohnDoyle, and clerk, Alex.
