Oaks Colliery, near Stairfoot, Barnsley, West Riding of Yorkshire Known mainly for its disasters Oaks Colliery as it was once known, is well documented for the tragic loss of more than 380 miners and rescuers on the 12 December 1866. Nearly twenty years before that 73 men and boys lost their lives too. In 1942 and 1947 more fatalities were recorded, 22 in total. Now Known as Barnsley Main Colliery, it was given Grade II listed status in 2013 and even though it has been disused for several years it stands testament and a memorial to all those who lost their lives.
