Sporophyte 2-3 cm, high; seta brown ; capsule erect, about 3 mm. long, 4: i, brown; operculum conic-rostrate; an- nulus large, of three rows of cells; peristome 3—4 mm. long; teeth linear-lanceolate, hyaline-margined, orange, with raised lines at base; segments linear, usually free at base, nearly as long as teeth ; spores minutely roughened, 14/4, maturing in early autumn. Type locality, Switzerland. On bark of trees, decaying logs and stumps. Europe, and North America east of the Rocky Mountains. Common.
