19th century visitors to Jedburgh Abbey, a ruined 2th century Augustinian abbey founded in the Scottish Borders just 10 miles (16 km) north of the border with England. After the defeat of the Earl of Surrey in 1297 at Stirling at the hands of William Wallace, the abbey was pillaged and wrecked by the English as retribution. Further damage to the abbey occurred to during Anglo-Scottish battles until the great Abbey of St. Mary of Jedburgh was finally ruined with the coming of the Scottish Reformation in 1560.
