Lalibela, Amhara region, Ethiopia. A beggar begs for money at the doors of one of Lalibela's churches. The Lalibela churches were carved into the living rock about 1200 representing the Holy Land in response to the capture of Jerusalem by the Muslims. Four of the churches are exempt; The others are attached to the mother rock, either by some wall or by the ceiling. The latter are also astounding; in all of them, the architectural spectacle is wonderful, a work of ants, in particular of 40,000 workers who were in charge of emptying thousands of cubic meters to expose the churches.
