In the Old Town at Hastings, East Sussex, England, peeling copy (since replaced) of 1600s portrait of British Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (c. 1650-1707) by Flemish history artist Willem de Ryck (1635-1699). The portrait hung until its renewal outside ‘Shovells’, a 15th century timber-framed Tudor cottage in All Saints Street, believed to have been the home of Sir Cloudesley’s mother, Anne Shovell.
Hastings, East Sussex, England, United Kingdom: this peeling copy of a 17th century portrait by Flemish history artist Willem de Ryck (1635-1699) of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (c. 1650-1707), hung until its recent renewal in All Saints Street in the Old Town outside ‘Shovells’, a 15th century timber-framed Tudor cottage believed to have been the home of his mother, Anne Shovell. Admiral Shovell was a naval hero who in 1704 helped capture the Rock of Gibraltar. The other side of the sign carried a copy of a portrait by Italian artist Antonio Poggi () of ‘Defender of Gibraltar’ General George Augustus Eliott, 1st Baron Heathfield (1717-1790). He commanded the British garrison that successfully withstood the four-year (1779-83) Franco-Spanish Great Siege of Gibraltar, about 75 years after Admiral Shovell had captured it.
