In 1858 or 1859, he was appointed General Solicitor of theGalena and Chicago Union Railroad, which position he helduntil that corporation became consolidated with the Chicago &North Western Railway Co. When that took place, was employed by the non-consenting stockholdersand bondholders, and engaged in a litigation to break up theconsolidation. He prepared a work, embodying the law uponthe subject of consolidation of railroad companies, whichv;as a masterly presentation of the subject. The case wasargued before Judge Davis of the United States SupremeCourt and Judge Treat of Springfield, and resulted in favor ofMr. Anthonys clients. Mr. Anthony early took part in the formation of theRepublican party and for more than a quarter of a centuryhas been a leader of that organization. He has twice been So THE ANTHONY FAAHLY. In the last he took a conspicuous part,and was chairman of the executive committee that framed thearticle in our present constitution, relating to the executivedepartment. In 1880, he engaged in the great contest in thisstate over the election of delegates to the National RepublicanConvention, was selected a delegate to that convention andaided in the nomination of General Garfield for President. In November of that year he was elected Judge of theSuperior Court of this city by a large majority.
