Shipbuilding in iron and steel / a practical treatise . . * These stanchions and the internal topside planking have been omitted in thesection given in Plato 4. Chap. XII. Topsides. 241. Fig. 183. Another arrangement of iron topsides is illustrated in Fig. transverse frames are run up about 2 feet above the upperdeck, and a horizontal gunwale plate isworked upon them. Above the gunwaleplate the bulwarks are completed bylight plating, supported by bar-ironstanchions similar to those before de-scribed. In some vessels which have poopsand forecastles, the bulwarks in wake ofthem are constructed of a rounded format the gunwale. This plan is recognizedby Lloyds Kules, which provide thatthe beams of the poop or forecastlemay be of plain angle-iron, of a sizenot less than that of the main frames, and that the angle-ironbeams must be properly riveted to every alternate main framewith a scarph not less than 4 feet inlength. An illustration of this kind ofgunwale is given in Fig, IS-l, whichis taken from the Sentinel, a shipof which the details of the constructionhave been previously given. The platingis continued up over the gunwale, anda stringer angle-iron is worked
