Development of East Boston. 97 In Boston an elevator should be built to serve as anoutlet for heavy vehicles, but in addition there should bealso a grade outlet and this might reasonably be throughCommercial street to the corner of Cross street. Forthis outlet Commercial street should be widened by takingthe row of buildings between Clinton street and the alleyon the west side. The tunnel as proposed will have a drop of about 100feet from the streets to the lowest point, with 3 per cent. As mentioned in the general survey (Part I.), an exten-sion of the tunnel in East Boston must inevitably berequired if the transit requirements continue to grow. Forsuch an extension two routes seem practicable and necessary,and, in either or both, subways could be built at any time. 98 City Planning Board.
