Polite People Nimbin


Local woman Sue wears the unifom of the "Polite Squad" outside the "Hemp Embassy" in Nimbin Australia. The Polite Squad was formed after local people were frustrated by the aggressive approach to policing in their town. An estimated 10,000 cannabis-lovers attended the 3 day festival which has its roots in the Aquarius festival in 1973. The MardisGrass was initiated in 1993 after police raids and marginalisation of people and business within the town caused locals to explore other avenues for the reform of Marijuana laws. An estimated 33% of the Australian population smoke cannabis and Nimbin inland from the popular coastal tourist location of Byron Bay is the Nations unofficial Marijuana capital attracting thousands of backpacking-travellers per year.
