Hot neutron source, abstract image. Neutrons are fundamental particles found in atomic nuclei. Typically emitted by a suitable radioactive source or nuclear reactor, neutrons have applications in various areas of physics, particularly the field known as neutron optics. The main element of the hot neutron source is a graphite block heated to 2000 Kelvin, placed in the centre of a two-wall cylindrical vessel with thermal insulation of graphite felt. As a result of collisions of neutrons with the nuclei of hot graphite, the neutron spectrum is shifted towards higher energies. Examples of neutron optics include neutron spectrometry, neutron diffraction, neutron scattering, and neutron tomography.
