Rudimentary treatise on the erection of dwelling-houses : illustrated by a perspective view, plans, elevations, and sections of a pair of semi-detached villas with the specification, quantities, and estimates and every requisite detail, in sequence, for their construction and finishing / by . making equi-distant dots in the circle which the com-passes describe. The movable points have a joint in them just underthat part which locks into the shank of the compasses,by which the part below the joint may be set perpen-dicular to the plane on which the lines are describedwhen the compasses are open. An additional piece, called a lengthening bar, is frequently applied to thesecompasses, which by lengthening the movable leg enables them to strike largercircles, or measure greaterextents than they otherwisewould perform. Whenthis is applied, the movablepart has a joint similar tothose on the pen and pencilpoints, and for a similarpurpose the annexed dia-gram represents this instru-ment and its appendages. a the compasses witha movable point at b ;c and d, the joints to set eachpoint perpendicular to thepaper; e the pencil point;f the pen point (this isill represented with a dot-ting wheel, the pen pointand the dotting point are similar in shape to each other);g the lengthening BOW COMPASSES. 73 Bow Compasses, These are a small pair having a point either for ink orpencil. They are used to describe small arcs or circles, which they do more conveniently than large compasses, not only on account of the size, but also from the shapeof their head, which rolls easily between the fingers andcan be turned round as delicately as they require to bemoved for drawing very minute circles. The adjoining figures represent the pencil bow assuited for describing: arcs of differentradii. Fie:. 1 &• is a construction adapted for describing arcs of a ra-dius intermediate between those de-scribed by the above-named com-passes, and those capable of beingproduced by the bows represe
