Bibi-Khanym Square. 19th-century artwork of Bibi-Khanym Square, Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In the background is the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, completed in 1404 under the reign of Turko-Mongol ruler Timur (Tamerlane), founder of the Timurid dynasty. The mosque crumbled to ruins over the following centuries, and partially collapsed in an earthquake in 1897. This wood engraving dates from circa 1888.
