This ground was first securedfor Fair purposes in 1856, and contained fortyacres. For nearly half a century the annual SaintLouis Fair was noted throughout the state, and toattend was a great event for those coming from theremote sections. The Prince of Wales (now King Edward)was entertained at the Saint Louis Fair in i860, <n SAINT LOUIS at the last brilliant gathering on these grovmds un-til after the war. During the war the Fair wasclosed, and a part of the grounds used for canton-ments, where from five thousand to ten thousandsoldiers were drilled—the site being called BentonBarracks—the pagoda was used for a militaryhospital, and other buildings for stables and storehouses. The location and surroundings make thisproperty valuable for park purposes, and the nameFairground seems most fitting. This park is to be essentially a play ground.
