The wifeoperates the substation and performs the duties of ticket andexpress agent during the daytime and the husband is on duty atnight. The electrical features of the substations are very current is led into the buildingthrough porcelain wall insulators. Taps for an electrolyticlightning arrester equipment and its horn gaps are just outsideof the wire entrances. The electrolytic arresters, of whichthere are four cells, are mounted on an insulated platform justinside the substation wall. The high-tension wires are carried on porcelain pedestalssecured to the ceiling of the substation. Three bus wires, towhich the transmission line is connected through hand-operatedknife switches, extend across the width of the substation andare supported on disk strain insulators, as shown in the floor. Electric RJ. Jour Indianapolis, New Castle & Toledo—Plan and Section of Substation from the generator bus. The General Electric Company sup-plied the major part of the electrical apparatus for the NewCastle line. SUBSTATIONS Three substations feed the trolley at points about 9 milesapart and are similar in design. A plan and sectional elevationof one of the substations is presented The keynote in the plan. Taps from these three buses are led through disconnect-ing switches down to the tops of three type F, form K-10 oilswitches, which serve to connect the incoming transmissionline with the step-down transformers feeding the rotary con-verter. The oil switches are designed to handle 100 amp at45,000 volts. They stand directly on the substation floor. Eachswitch has a time-limit relav on it. 368 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL. [Vol. XXXVII. No. 9. The step-down transformers, of which there are three, are110-kw oil-insulated units. Low-voltage alternating current
