These inter-ments are peculiar to the stratum weare now considering, since as will beshown further on, none were madeduring the subsequent period repre-sented by the superposed debris. Theinterments on the east side of themound (No. 154-1, 12) were discoveredduring the excavations of 1857; therest were found last winter (1879).The bodies were buried with the facesdownwards, the heads towards the App. IV.] BY MR. FRANK CALVERT. 713 west, and the knees doubled up. Thehead of one was found resting on ahand-mill stone (No. 1552). Gene-. No. 1552. Skeleton, with Skull resting on hand-millstone. rally speaking, they seem to havebeen interred in the loose earth; atall events, no special graves or tombs No. 1553. were prepared to receive them. Anexception, however, must be made inthe case of two infants, whose boneswere found in small tombs made ofsun-dried bricks. The skeleton of oneof these was that of a newly-bornbabe; it was extended on the back,and the tomb in which it was laidwas free from earth (No. 3 541, 4,Nos. 1553, 1554). Curiously enough,though the bones show no signsof having been burnt, a quantity No. 1554.
