BCG vaccine culture. Hands holding a flask of bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) culture, as part of research into a DNA vaccine for tuberculosis (TB). A deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) vaccine consists of purified DNA that codes for a disease antigen. Here, antigen 85 has been released in the fluid (yellow) underneath cultured BCG vaccine (grey). Professor Content and Dr Huygen at the Brussels Pasteur Institute are developing a vaccine with DNA coding for antigen 85. TB is a very widespread disease with a high mortality rate. A DNA vaccine could make a big impact in the global fight against the disease, particularly providing protection for at risk HIV-positive patients.
