Curch of St. Claudio al Chienti near Macerata

The church of San Claudio al Chienti is a Romanesque building which is located in the municipality of Corridonia (Macerata), in a secluded valley in the Chienti. Documented since the eleventh century, is one of the oldest and most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the Marche region, is still intact in its original shape and inserted in a landscape still untouched. Little is known of its history and its origin. In the past we thought it was an abbey, then transformed into a church, but recent studies seem to exclude this source [1]. The church has many specific types. Presents as a rounded internally divided by four pillars to form a Greek cross inscribed in a square. There are semi-circular apses along the perimeter: the sides and on the eastern side. The construction also occurs on two levels with a lower and upper church. Finally, the facade is flanked by two cylindrical towers.
