Built in 1946, the Ledra Palace Hotel in Nicosia used to be the finest hotel on the square. Since the civil war between Greek and Turkish Cypriots broke out in 1963, it has stood in no man's land between the two ethnic groups. Since 1964, the hotel has served as quarters for the British UN peacekeeping forces UNFICYP.
