Wild Bill Hickock, American scout and lawman, 1873 (1954). Artist: Unknown

Wild Bill Hickock, American scout and lawman, 1873 (1954). Noted for his prowess as a gunfighter, Hickock was a target for men eager to gain the reputation of being the one to have killed him. He was murdered on 2 August 1876, by Jack McCall, who walked into the saloon in Deadwood, South Dakota, where Hickock was playing poker, and shot him in the back of the head. The cards he was holding at the time, two black aces, two black eights and the jack of diamonds, have been known as the 'dead man's hand' by poker players ever since. A print from the Pictorial History of the Wild West, by James D Horan and Paul Sann, Spring Books, London, 1954.
